Project 73 0f 365: Jungle Baby Card August 14, 2010

This card was also a special request from my Sister-In-Law.  This card is for a Baby Shower where the theme is jungle animals.  Another request, from the mother-to-be, is that she doesn’t want any gender stereo-type colors or themes for the baby/baby shower.  They know that they are having a girl, but want to avoid the stereo-type of all pink and things like “princess” or “spoiled”.  I completely understand where she is coming from….but….I can totally see myself going pink-crazy if I were to have a baby and it were a girl 🙂   I, too, don’t like those “spoiled” or “brat” type themed clothing either.   Unless, of course, it were from the grandparents and it said something like “my grandma/grandpa spoil me rotten”  because grandparents get to spoil their grandkids….at least that was always what my grandparents always said about all the grandkids they didn’t raise themselves.

Well, I think I  succeeded in no gender stereotypes on this card.  When I first completed the card I didn’t really like it.  It just looked so plain and 2D.  So I went back with my Stampin Write Markers and gave it more depth with shadows, and definition on the leaves and such, and then highlights from a white gel pen.  It made a world of difference.  The card was “OK” when it was just paper, but so much better with the added dimension gained with the markers and white pen.

Well it’s time to get ready for the concert, and tomorrow afternoon I will be going to that baby shower with my Sister-in-Law.  So hopefully I will find time tomorrow night to post some more of the projects I have sitting here waiting to be blogged about 🙂

Project 69 of 365: Eggplant Wedding August 6, 2010

I cannot believe that it is Friday already!  Where did the week go???  Oh yeah…it probably went to the brilliantly “simple” home improvement ideas I had on Tuesday.  If my husband knew what was good for him (and our bank account) he would post a picture of me by every cashier at Home Depot with a note saying DO NOT LET THIS WOMAN BUY ANY HOME IMPROVEMENT ITEMS.  LOL!!!

I think every time I step into a home improvement store I suddenly snap into this overly optimistic mood, and have delusions of my actual home improvement ideas.  Or, just to move some of the blame off myself, maybe I should sue all companies that put instructions on the back of their projects making it sound “so simple” or  “no fail.”  I think that my crafting spirit somehow believes that it can magically transform into “Super Handywoman,” because everytime I get to the store I am 100% confident that I can fix this or that all by myself, yet somehow it never quite works out the way I envisioned.

At Home Depot I purchased $80 worth of items to fix 5 issues in the house.  I was so proud of myself, and already preparing how I was going to WOW all of you with all that could be done with that money, but alas only 2 of those projects are complete (and one of those I’m still not so sure about.)

The biggest disaster was caulking the bathtub.  I tackled this first as it should have been a 30 minute job max.  We have been having problems with re-caulking the tub.  For whatever reason no caulk wants to stick, and it just peels off as soon as it gets wet (and yes we have been following the directions.)  Caulking the tub was supposed to be a surprise to Mike when he got home from work.  After all its not rocket science.  I asked the Home Depot guy what to do about the issue, and he showed me some caulk remover (as maybe the new caulk wasn’t sticking because there was too much old stuff left behind) and he picked out a caulk for me.

Our house gave me yet another surprise….When I decided I would make sure I got all the old caulk out I found yet another SNEAKY surprise left by the previous owner.  The caulk was up to 2 inches thick, and once I got to the end of that I could stick the plastic knife I was using 3-4 inches in before it was stopped by anything.  There was nothing behind the lowest level of tiles????  I was starting to get scared that the whole wall would collapse if I pulled out all the caulk…not to mention how much caulk was actually falling down inside the gaping hole between the tub the wall and the tile.  Why can’t Holmes on Homes come to Wisconsin?  Our house would be a real treat!!

So once I got all the caulk out I was left with the mystery of what to do about the hole.  In the end I realized it doesn’t make sense to over do this as we are going to have Bathfitters come in next year (hopefully) to install a tub and surround around our current tub….as much as I love the idea of real tile we have to go with what we can afford 😦  So I start pushing caulk back in the opening, and run out of caulk before finishing (since I wasn’t expecting the big hole), and now Home Depot is closed.  I was so upset, that after working on my 30 min project for over 5 hours I was basically going to have to start over the next day after I got more caulk because, the way I understand it, to get a proper seal I don’t think you can let half of it dry and then finish the rest???

Well….the next day I decided not to pull the caulk back up and start over, because I had stuffed it pretty far back in the space between the tub and tile, and instead start where I left off with the new caulk, and then when I had caulk all the way around I went back around with a thin coat all the way around.  It looks much better now, but until I take a shower after writing this article, I won’t know if it did the trick…

This was just WAY more difficult than it was supposed to be!!

As for the adventures with the rest of the home improvements I will add them to later posts.

On to something that did work out as planned….

This is the card I made for a wedding Mike and I attended last Saturday.  The colors used on this card are inspired by the colors used on their invitation.

Project 55 of 365: Friends Never Fade in Pear Pizzazz July 12, 2010

I saved my favorite one for last tonight.  The background paper in this one truly reminds me of retro kitchen wallpaper 🙂

Believe it or not….I actually decorated the inside of this card.  I usually don’t put anything on the inside of the card until I go to use it, but I could tell by the little sliver the original creator left showing that she had replicated the main image in the lower corner of the inside as well, so I just had to do it too….after all I am being a total “follower” today since all of today’s cards are cased (with only minor changes).

Project 52 of 365: Friends Never Fade 3×3 Card

Don’t you just love this new stamp set (Friends Never Fade)?  I think that’s why I cased all these cards….This is one of the sets that’s really hot right now, so everyone is using it…meaning if you purchase it (thru me or anyone else) you will have no problems finding more ideas and examples than you know what to do with.

This next card is just a 3×3 little thank you note, or you could adjust it and make it into a gift tag by simply changing the greeting.  This card is cased from another card from the demonstrator-only website by Terri Walker.

Project 51 of 365: Friends Never Fade in White

Hi Everyone,

I have found an efficient way of keeping up with my 365 projects in 365 days challenge!!  If I sit down with just one stamp set at a time and create several projects focusing on just that stamp set I seem to get a lot of projects done in one sitting, and in not a lot of time.  This is a true life saver with all the driving I have been doing to spend time with my grandmother…And if I get the job that I have been crossing my fingers for, this efficiency will help me continue with this challenge 🙂

The stamp set I set my focus on today is the Friends Never Fade set from the brand new 2010-2011 Stampin’ Up! Idea Book and Catalog.  I was able to create 5 completely different cards in about 2 hours….How’s that for efficiency? I must confess that none of these are really “original ideas” and a couple are outright copies of other cards I have seen.  There are just so many awesome cards posted on various sites using this set that I just could not help myself but to make them for myself 🙂  I will give credit to the appropriate person on each card.

This card is basically a complete replication of a card made by Wendy Wexler (except the extra blob of ink.  lol. ) that I saw on the demonstrator-only website.

If you look closely you will see that I made an “oopsy” on this card.  My first thought was to start over, but then I remembered how I always tell everyone at classes and workshops, that it doesn’t matter if you mess up, just to go with it, because homemade cards aren’t supposed to be perfect.  If we wanted perfect cards we would go to the store and buy them.  (The mistake is the extra blob of green ink by the stem of the flower…I dropped the stamp..lol… If I didn’t point it out, and if you didn’t own the stamp, you may have just thought that was part of the stamp…)

Supplies:

Paper:

  • Whisper White

Ink: (All Markers)

  • Pear Pizzazz
  • Marina Mist
  • Daffodil Delight

Stamps:

  • Friends Never Fade
  • Because I Care

Accessories:

  • Marina Mist Ribbon
  • Vintage Wallpaper Emboss Folder
  • Large Oval Punch
  • Piercing Tool and Mat
  • Stampin Dimensionals

Keep checking back as I attempt to get all 5 of these cards posted tonight.  Believe it or not, it takes longer to post these to the blog than to make them 🙂

Project 37 of 365: Friends Never Fade Sneak Peak June 25, 2010

So yesterday I finally got the remainder of my Sneak Peak order, and I just had to break out this cute stamp set “Friends Never Fade.” I had already seen many cards made with this set, and knew that I also wanted to use the new Pear Pizzazz cardstock as well as the new Vintage Wallpaper Textured Impressions Embossing Folder.  In the end I accidently cased a card I had seen on SplitCoast Stampers.  I am laughing at myself a bit on this one.  Often times I copy other people on purpose, but this time I must have just had this other card stuck in my mind.  The card I am talking about is by Jeannie Maier, and mine is slightly different, but close enough to being the same that I think I should give her credit 🙂

And check out the patterned paper on this one…..Isn’t it so cute?  It is another sneak peak from the new catalog and it’s called Greenhouse Gala.

Projects 25-27: Catalog Sneak Peak June 14, 2010

I have a treat for you today!!!  I have created 3 cards for you and they are ALL taken from the pages of the brand new 2010-2011 Stampin’ Up! Idea Book and Catalog set to release on July 1, 2010.  If you have not yet ordered your catalog be sure to send me an email at betty.ray020@gmail.com.  I am charging $9 for the catalog and this includes PRIORITY mailing, so really you are only paying $3-4 for you catalog (that’s less than I pay for them, but I do this in the hope that you will also choose me as your demonstrator for your purchases from the catalog.)  I will be mailing these out the same day I receive my stock of them (expected to be here 1 1/2 to 2 weeks from now). So order early as I did not order that many catalogs….remember….I’m the broke crafter 🙂  After my initial stock is gone you can still order catalogs, but at the normal SU price of $9.95 plus shipping.

I am also very happy to announce that my blog has been live for 1 month, and as of today I have passed 2,000 views…I’ll take that as a sign that I am doing something right 🙂  Now if I can just find some people in the area to hold workshops so I can sell some stuff the world would be a happy place.  Please contact me if you would like to hold a workshop or class in your home, and you live within a 1-2 hour drive of Milwaukee.  I can teach technique classes for a per person fee, which includes everyone completing the project and taking it home with them, or if you live less than 1 hour from Milwaukee we can do the traditional workshop where you gather a group of friends to make a couple simple cards, and browse the catalog (no per person fee, and the hostess receives FREE stuff based on the amount of sales at the party).  I also hold classes where you get to complete 12 cards or several scrapbook pages, and just pay a fee (this way people are not expected to browse the catalogs and buy stuff, they just get to hang out with friends, and make some really cool stuff.)  Just email me if any of these ideas sound interesting to you!!  betty.ray020@gmail.com (thats zero-two-zero) or just post a comment below with your email and I will contact you.
